BBQ Banter - Get the latest sizzle on everything Liberal!

As we continue pushing ahead with our plan to deliver fairness for every generation, Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives have been flipping the narrative and spreading a lot of bologna about the work Justin Trudeau and our Liberal team are doing to build a better Canada.

As you prepare for the first barbeque of the season, here are some sizzling lines to remember when you’re getting grilled by a friend or family member trying to bring the heat about politics.

“Someone needs to stop the Liberals’ spending and fix the Budget.”

Our Liberal team is making historic investments in housing, public health care, pharmacare, dental care, the environment, child care, and so much more. These investments are leveling the playing field for young Canadians so that they have the same opportunities as their parents and grandparents.

But Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives are trying to cut programs that middle class families depend on, like National Universal Pharmacare, the Canada Dental Care Plan, and the Canada Carbon Rebate, if it means that their rich friends pay less taxes. Here’s what it boils down to:

If you want your Budget well done, you can’t trust the Conservatives.

We have a real plan, Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives are just winging it.

“Pierre Poilievre is exactly the kind of leader the Conservatives need.”

Firstly, anytime someone you know starts taking notes from infamous American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, you should take anything they say with a grain of salt.

Pierre Poilievre doesn’t care about Canadians. He has repeatedly called for cuts to programs that middle class Canadians depend on, including $10-a-day child care, the Canada Carbon Rebate, the 3.87 million affordable homes we’re unlocking for Canadians, and so much more.

He’d rather promote the interests of his corporate lobbyist friends and hang out with far-right extremist groups than look out for Canadians.

And he has no problem with the idea of cutting your Charter rights. In fact, he’s made it plain that he relishes the opportunity to invoke the notwithstanding clause. Pierre Poilievre’s leadership puts all of our rights and freedoms at steak.

Canadians need responsible leadership. And that is not Pierre Poilievre.

“We need to axe the carbon tax – it’s making everything more expensive!”

Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives can chant, “axe the tax,” as much as they want, but it doesn’t change the fact that it works.

The Canada Carbon Rebate is possible because we put a price on pollution. In fact, 8 out of 10 Canadians get more money back through the rebate than they pay into the system, because the big polluters pay the most.

As the price of carbon goes up, so do the rebates and it’s helping Canada cut pollution faster than any other G7 country.

We’re making progress to fight climate change, grow our economy, support our volunteer firefighters, and clean our air – but Pierre Poilievre and his climate denial wants to roll back our progress. It’s time to skewer their misinformation and flip the narrative.

“What happened to Canadian health care?”

Every Canadian deserves quality care when and where they need it.

Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives think otherwise. They want to cut free contraceptives and life-saving diabetes medication, voted against dental care, and have tried to block attempts to strengthen our public health care system. He’s made it clear he’d cut investments in vital services Canadians rely on.

Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau and our Liberal team continue to strengthen our public health care system by:

  • Helping Canadians with access to contraceptives and life-saving diabetes medication by introducing National Universal Pharmacare
  • Rolling out dental care that will support 9 million uninsured Canadians
  • Removing the GST and HST on psychotherapy and counselling and introducing the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline
  • Reducing wait times
  • Modernizing our health care system
  • And so much more.

“All this talk on making life more fair for Gen Z and Millennials – what about seniors?”

It’s time we marinate in the facts.

When Stephen Harper and Pierre Poilievre wanted to increase the retirement age from 65 to 67 – Justin Trudeau and our Liberal team said no. We reversed that reckless Conservative policy and we took real action to ensure Canada’s seniors could retire comfortably after a lifetime of hard work.

We’ve also increased the OAS pension by 10% for all seniors aged 75+, created the Age Well at Home initiative to help low-income and vulnerable seniors live at home for as long as possible, expanded eligibility for more than 1 million seniors to receive dental care, increased the Canada and Quebec Pension Plan’s maximum yearly benefit by nearly 50%, and decreased the poverty rate among seniors by 20%.

Hot dog!

“How will I ever buy a home and get ahead in this housing market?”

Our Liberal team is building more homes, modernizing our communities, and making the housing market fairer. Like those onions on your burger, this plan has layers:

  • Unlocking 3.87 million homes
  • Helping Canadians save up to $40,000 through our Tax-Free First Home Savings Account
  • Removing the federal GST on new rental construction
  • Topping up the Apartment Construction Loan Program
  • Making rent more affordable by unlocking over 600,000 new middle class apartments
  • Protecting renters from renoviction, unfair rent increases, and bad landlords while making it easier to use your rental history to qualify for a mortgage

Pierre Poilievre would cut GST incentives, cut funding to help growing cities, and cut support for cooperative housing.

Instead, we’re investing in new housing so you don’t have to be in a pickle or play ketchup catch up.

“The Liberals’ “woke” policies have gone too far.”

It’s just too easy to roast this claim.

Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative politicians are complaining about “woke” paper coffee lids to distract from the fact that their only plans are to make deep cuts to programs Canadians rely on and bring far-right American style politics to Canada.

Pierre Poilievre has continuously demonstrated that hate, discrimination, and name-calling are welcome in his Conservative Party. And in the past few weeks we’ve seen him tell far-right extremists, “Everyone’s happy with what you’re doing,” resort to personal attacks in the House of Commons, and allow his MPs to reopen the abortion debate.

While Justin Trudeau and our Liberal team will always stand up for Canadians’ rights and freedoms, Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives have demonstrated that they’ll do anything to win.
