Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau campaigns in Labrador
April 29, 2013
I just returned from a great visit to Labrador with Yvonne Jones, our Liberal candidate in the upcoming by-election.
Last Wednesday night we started off with a rally in Happy Valley-Goose Bay attended by about three hundred people. It was an absolutely amazing time, and there was phenomenal energy in the room. It was a great start to campaigning in Labrador.
On day two, Thursday, I had a full day on the ground with Yvonne meeting lots of people in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. We went into a local art gallery, where we chatted with all sorts of folks from the surrounding community. I was really glad to see my friend Todd Russell, President of the NunatuKavut, and talk about their pressing land claims.
We also had great briefings on the Boeing Vertol Search and Rescue helicopters and discussed the important role of search and rescue, which is a huge concern for people all over the North, and particularly in Labrador.
Thursday night I joined Yvonne for a rally in Wabush. The room was packed with at least 250 people or more, and there were great, thoughtful questions from the floor, especially around inclusion and community strength. My message was simply about hard work – and that every vote counts. This by-election we are sending a big message to Stephen Harper that what he’s doing is not good enough for the people of Labrador and for all Canadian families.
On Friday, Yvonne and I spent the morning at the Iron Ore Company of Canada mine. This is a really amazing operation, and I’m very pleased to have had the opportunity to visit it. Later in the day, we went to the mall where we did some mainstreeting and stopped in to visit a variety of local businesses.
I especially enjoyed being invited to the local high school to talk to students about the importance of their role is as leaders of today, not just leaders of tomorrow.
On a final note, I want to thank Dwight Ball, Leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Official Opposition, who spent a whole day with us campaigning in Labrador City and western Labrador.
Most importantly, I look forward to seeing Yvonne in Ottawa after May 13!
Justin
PS. If you live in Labrador, please volunteer your time. We’re building our team and we’re going to need your help to canvass, phone bank and get out the vote when the time comes.
Wherever you live, please consider making a donation to the campaign – which anyone can do because riding donations are not counted against your national limit. Whether it’s $5 or $1200, every dollar counts.
There’s one last way you can help – and that’s to help spread the word. Please sign and share our petition on Facebook and help reclaim Labrador’s voice in the House of Commons.
