Liberal Statement on Canadians Detained in Egypt
August 22, 2013
TORONTO and MONTRÉAL– Liberal Consular Affairs critic Kirsty Duncan made the following statement today on the two Canadians currently detained in Egypt:
“We are greatly concerned by the arrest of Canadians Tarek Loubani and John Greyson in Egypt. They do not appear to have been directly engaged in any illegal activity and it is therefore incumbent upon Egyptian authorities to clarify the reason for their detention.”
Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Marc Garneau continued:
“In circumstances such as those now prevailing in Egypt, it is important that Canadian consular officials remain in close touch with both the Egyptian authorities and the prisoners themselves in order to ensure their safety, provide a channel for communication with their families, and insist that the circumstances surrounding their detention be clarified and any possible misunderstandings are resolved as quickly as possible.”
