Liberal statement on National Day of Mourning
April 28, 2014
OTTAWA – Liberal Employment, Social Development, and Labour Critic, Rodger Cuzner, today issued the following statement on the National Day of Mourning:
“Each year, we take time on April 28th to commemorate the National Day of Mourning. This day serves to remind us of those Canadians who have been injured or killed as a result of workplace incidents.
“Workplace safety remains an important concern for Canadians in many fields across the country. It is estimated that as many as 1,000 deaths occur each year as a result of occupational injury or illness. We can and must do better for Canadian workers, particularly through more stringent safety standards and compliance measures.
“I offer my sympathies to all those who have lost a loved one in the workplace and to those who suffer ongoing injury or illness as a result of poor work environments. Let us commit to making progress together on workplace safety in Canada.”
