Today, May 29th, is International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. It is a day of commemoration and an occasion to salute peacekeepers, past and present, who have served the most vulnerable persons around the globe during their time of greatest need.

Why is this focus on the middle class so important? Why not target help for the poor? Or take aim at trickle-down economics? It’s simple: a strong economy is one in which the largest number of people benefit from prosperity and high-quality jobs.

Bill C-54 is ineffective policy that will decrease public safety. It plays on the politics of fear to perpetuate myths and stereotypes about mental illness that will only lead to further stigmatization. When we vote this week, we will be standing for increased public safety and evidence-based policies.

As I left my home community of Mary's Harbour Tuesday, the early morning rise, and the two-hour trek over gravel roads and worn pavement were the same, but something was different. Labrador was about to change and I was going to lead that progress for people. I looked forward and I saw an even bigger land with vast potential.
