Statement from Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on the resignation of Senator Roméo Dallaire
May 28, 2014
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement following the announcement of the Honourable Roméo Dallaire’s resignation from the Senate on June 17:
“It is with enormous gratitude that I thank Senator Roméo Dallaire for his nine years of service to the Canadian people as a member of the Senate of Canada.
“LGen Dallaire, of course, did not only serve his country in the upper house of Parliament. His military career spanned nearly four decades and saw him posted in Africa, Europe, and North America.
“LGen Dallaire is notably remembered around the world as the commander of the United Nations peacekeeping force prior to and during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. He continues to be a global leader and advocate on human rights, genocide prevention, military veterans and post-traumatic stress disorder, and ending the use of child soldiers.
“Roméo Dallaire is a humanitarian in a class of his own. While his departure is certainly a loss for Parliament, the world will continue to benefit from his leadership and service to the international community.”
