Liberals Blast Conservative Attacks on Fleet Separation
April 22, 2013
OTTAWA– Documents obtained under the Access to Information Act reveal the Conservatives’ real opinion on fleet separation and owner-operator policies for fishers, said Liberal Fisheries and Oceans critic Lawrence MacAulay today.
“Once again, the Harper Conservatives are taking a swipe at fishers and Atlantic Canadians, their seasonal industries and way of life,” said Mr. MacAulay. “These latest comments are nothing short of degrading, and are shockingly reminiscent of Prime Minister Harper’s infamous comments that there is a culture of defeat in Atlantic Canada.”
In a letter dated March 13, 2012 to Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield, Conservative Senator Stephen Greene revealed the Conservatives’ true attitude, labeling fleet separation as “immoral” and “one of the worst industrial policies in Canadian history.” Specifically, the Senator said that fleet separation is responsible for “generations of dependency,” “the acceptance of massive EI fraud,” and “the perpetuation of a culture of dependence.” He concluded by offering to help Minister Ashfield “drive a stake through this policy.”
“This type of language is unbelievably offensive to the thousands of fishers in eastern Canada who proudly make their living in the inshore fishery. Fleet separation protects the interests of small, independent owner-operators and Atlantic fishing communities,” said Mr. MacAulay. “The Prime Minister must immediately condemn and apologize for the shameful views of this Conservative caucus member who finds Atlantic Canadians’ way of life ‘immoral.’”
