Harper isn’t fooling anyone on fisheries protection

VANCOUVER – Liberal candidate for Vancouver Centre, Dr. Hedy Fry, today issued the following statement on British Columbia’s marine environment:

“Stephen Harper isn’t fooling anyone about his failure to protect our lakes, rivers, and oceans.

“Harper cut the Fisheries budget by $100 million in 2013, he eliminated environmental protection for thousands of Canadian lakes and rivers, and he fired more than 2,000 public scientists who help monitor and protect our environment.

“What’s more, the Conservatives amended the Fisheries Act to remove the habitat protection for salmon.

“Canadians understand that our wealth comes from our land and water, so we treat them with respect. Stephen Harper doesn’t get it and it’s one of the many reasons after ten failed years, it’s time for him to go.

“Now and in the future, the path to economic growth and good middle class jobs is through strong environmental policy.”
