Mulcair’s absurd Senate savings pledge
August 27, 2015
TORONTO – In a weak attempt to deflect growing criticism of the NDP’s balanced budget austerity pledge, Thomas Mulcair absurdly stated today he’ll find savings by eliminating the Senate by next Spring.
Nice try. Several provinces including Ontario and Quebec openly oppose Senate abolition, meaning Mulcair will never achieve his phony Senate commitment, let alone achieve anything by next Spring.
“Thomas Mulcair’s rhetoric is becoming laughable. Instead of telling the truth to Canadians, he’s absurdly pretending he can save a billion dollars by eliminating the Senate just six or seven months from now,” said Liberal candidate for Markham—Thornhill, John McCallum. “Mulcair knows he won’t save a penny as long as the provinces oppose Senate abolition, but that doesn’t stop him from saying whatever’s convenient.”
“Thomas Mulcair will need to break his promises and impose massive cuts to balance the budget next Spring,” said Mr. McCallum. “This nonsense on the Senate confirms Mulcair’s promises don’t add up.”

REPORTER: “If reversing income splitting and raising corporate taxes are not enough to cover your promises, where would you cut in order to balance the budget?”
MULCAIR: “There are a whole bunch of things we’re going to do differently from Stephen Harper… He’s spent a billion on the Senate. I’m gonna try to make sure that Canadians never spend another penny on the wasteful (Senate).”
