Liberal Statement on the 70th Anniversary of D-Day
June 6, 2014
REGINA, SK, AND GUELPH, ON – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day:
“70 years ago today, over 24,000 Canadian soldiers, sailors, and airmen launched an assault on Juno Beach that would turn the tide of World War II – with their success, the Allied Forces began their final push to bring peace to Europe.
“This day will live forever in the memory of our nation. Many were killed or wounded before they even reached the beaches of France, and by the battle’s end some 359 Canadians had laid down their lives. As part of the nearly 150,000 Allied Forces who fought at Normandy, these individuals marked their place in history.
“We must never forget the sacrifices that were made on that day. Today, I have the privilege of attending a commemorative ceremony with members of the Royal Regina Rifles at Saskatchewan’s Government House. I join with all Canadians in remembering the courage displayed by our Armed Forces during the landings, as well as the sacrifices that are required for democracy and freedom to thrive.
“May we honour those men and women who continue to serve in the name of our country and may we never lose sight of our sacred obligation to serve and support them in recognition of all they have done for us.”
Liberal Critic for Veterans Affairs, Frank Valeriote, continued:
“To this day, members of the Canadian Armed Forces continue to serve our country with passion and pride. They, and the families who support them, deserve to be both supported and respected. Today, the Liberal Party of Canada reaffirms its unwavering commitment to support all Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, and their families, now and in the years to come.”
