Liberal Statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
November 25, 2013
TORONTO– Liberal Status of Women Critic, Kirsty Duncan, made the following statement today on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women:
“Today, Canadians join with the international community in a commitment to ending the ongoing violation of women’s most fundamental rights around the world. It was in 1999 that the United Nations designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
“Though we have made great progress in recent years, too many women in every corner of the globe are forced to live with the constant threat of physical, sexual, or emotional violence. In Canada, more than 3,000 women on any given day are seeking refuge from violence. We can and must do better.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I would like to take this opportunity to express our unyielding commitment to the health, safety, and equality of women and girls around the world.”
