Liberal Statement on Iran Negotiations
November 24, 2013
MONTREAL– The Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic, Marc Garneau, made the following statement today on the agreement reached in Geneva between the P5+1 and the Islamic Republic of Iran:
“We support this development as an important first step toward addressing our concerns with Iran’s nuclear program.
“It is our view that engaging in constructive dialogue toward a lasting solution is better than no dialogue at all.
“In the next six months, through a regular inspection process, the world will be able to see whether Iran is complying with its obligations. Canada, with its expertise on nuclear controls and its strong position in the International Atomic Energy Agency, should seek to play a constructive role in this process.
“Our objective remains a successful comprehensive agreement that ensures that Iran cannot acquire a nuclear weapon. The deal reached last night in Geneva is a positive first step but it requires continued vigilance and further concrete, verifiable measures.”
