Liberals nominate Mary Ng as Team Trudeau candidate for Markham–Thornhill
March 4, 2017
Ottawa, ON – Mary Ng, a longtime community leader and public servant, has been nominated as the official Team Trudeau candidate for Markham–Thornhill in its upcoming federal by-election, after an open vote on Saturday by local Liberals at the Markham Event Centre.
“I am incredibly honoured to have earned the trust and confidence of Liberals in Markham-Thornhill to represent them in this dynamic and diverse community and on Parliament Hill,” said Ng. “My goal is to spend the next several weeks of the by-election working hard to earn the support of voters to become the next Member of Parliament for this important riding.”
Mary immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong with her family and grew up learning the struggle and eventual success that many new immigrants face on Canadian soil. She devoted her life to public service and has been especially influential in the areas of education and creating job opportunities for young entrepreneurs and students.
She has spent years working for the Ontario Public Service, Minister of Education, and Ryerson University. Her recognition as one of the top-performing Canadian public sector leaders, led her to be recruited in 2015 as a trusted senior advisor to Prime Minister Trudeau as Director of Appointments. She is the highest ranking Chinese-Canadian to have ever served in the Prime Minister’s Office and recently accompanied and advised the Prime Minister in the official trade delegation to China
“Mary Ng is a devoted community leader who has always believed in the power of public service,” said Anna Gainey, President of the Liberal Party of Canada. “Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team are looking forward to campaigning with Mary to grow and strengthen our middle class, and to build an even brighter future for families in Markham-Thornhill and across Canada.”
Ng joins three other outstanding community leaders who registered Liberals have already nominated as by-election candidates: Mona Fortier for Ottawa—Vanier, Haley Brown for Calgary Midnapore, and Dr. Scott Forsyth for Calgary Heritage.
The Liberal Party of Canada is the only federal political party that is open for Canadians to join and get involved at no cost, with over 60,000 Canadians registering as new Liberals since last summer alone.
All five upcoming by-elections will be held on Monday, April 3rd, 2017.
