Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on the Sisters in Spirit Vigils for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls
October 4, 2015
BRAMPTON, ON – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the Sisters in Spirit Vigils, occurring across the country, in honour of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls:
“Today, from coast to coast to coast, Canadians will gather to honour the memory of the nearly 1,200 Indigenous women and girls who have gone missing or been murdered in the past several decades, provide support to their families and communities, and demand action to end this national tragedy once and for all.
“A Liberal government will immediately launch a national public inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples, families of the victims, and provincial and territorial governments.
“The time for concrete action is long overdue. This is an issue that affects all Canadians, and we must work together, as a country, to ensure that all women can live their lives free from violence and fear.”
