Statement by the Leader of the Liberal Party, Justin Trudeau, on Nayrouz
September 11, 2021
Today, the Leader of the Liberal Party, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement on Nayrouz:
“Here in Canada, and around the world, Coptic Orthodox Christians will welcome the Feast of Nayrouz and the Coptic New Year.
“Nayrouz, also known as the Feast of Rivers, marks the beginning of Thout, the first month of the Coptic calendar and a time for new beginnings. From its earliest origins, Nayrouz marked a day of thanks for an abundance of crops created by the high waters of the Nile, providing sustenance for vast communities of ancient Egyptians.
“Every year, Coptic Christians come together with family, friends, and loved ones to give thanks for all the year has brought, even during years of great challenge. Home to home, and virtually and responsibly during COVID-19, Coptic Christians gather to reflect on the resilience of their people throughout history – from the days of Roman rule to the current challenges presented by the pandemic.
“Today, we take a moment to do the same and give thanks for all that Coptic Christians bring to Canada’s communities and to celebrate their many contributions. We also join them in welcoming the Coptic New Year, ushering in new hope for a better future.
“I wish you all a happy Nayrouz!”
