Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Ukraine’s Independence Day
August 24, 2013
AYER’S CLIFF, QC– The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made the following statement today on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day:
“Today marks 22 years since Ukraine’s independence and a special occasion that will be celebrated by Ukrainians and the more than one million Ukrainian-Canadians across our country.
Canada was the first Western country to recognize Ukrainian independence, and this is a testament to the strong and enduring friendship that has existed between our peoples. Today, Canada continues to stand up for democracy, human rights and the rule of law for all Ukrainians.
Ukrainian-Canadians have played an integral role in the success of our country, and Canada has stood with the Ukrainian community as they have sought freedom and democracy.
Thanks to generations of Canadians, we are blessed to live in one of the most peaceful and prosperous countries in the world. Canada’s greatness has emerged not in spite of its diversity, but because of it.
I am delighted to extend my very best wishes to you and your loved ones as you celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day.”
