Liberal Statement on Persons Day
October 18, 2013
OTTAWA– The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made the following statement today on Persons Day:
“Today, we commemorate the efforts of five courageous Canadian women – the ‘Famous Five’ – who fought for a now unquestionable notion: the right of women to be considered persons.
They broke down barriers in an effort to achieve the full membership of women in society, particularly in public service, and today is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the continued importance of the Persons Case and the Famous Five’s objectives.
Despite the tremendous progress that has been made in advancing women’s participation in the public sphere, and in Parliament, we must recommit to guaranteeing women and girls full equality, both here in Canada and around the world.”
Liberal Status of Women Critic, Dr. Kirsty Duncan, continued:
“Today we celebrate the Famous Five’s historic victory on October 18, 1929, and the many substantial advances women have since achieved politically, socially and economically.
But let us not believe their fight has been completely won. Here in Canada, the government must do far more to address pay equity, support maternal health by upholding the full range of reproductive services, end violence against women, value women’s work, and ensure the availability of affordable child care. Abroad, Canada must continue to vigorously stand against discrimination and human rights violations that target women.
The strength of any society is dependent on the complete participation and advancement of women, and the Liberal Party of Canada will continue to champion this cause.”
