This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of joining in Diwali celebrations in both Toronto and Montreal. It was a real privilege to visit two mandirs and one gurdwara, and it made for a very busy weekend!
Diwali is a unique and wonderful occasion where some of the world’s great faiths join together, in what we fondly refer to as the festival of lights. This name has new meaning for me every time I witness the warmth and glow of the diyas lighting up the mandir and gurdwara.
This Diwali, I was delighted to see many families coming together to celebrate, and the pride in their culture being passed on to future generations. From the vibrant colours to the laughter of the many children that filled the room, there was an incredible sense of community to be felt in the langar, and indeed everywhere I was invited.
The day’s events could not help but remind me that we share a country that is great not in spite of its diversity, but because of it. Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains have a deep history in Canada, and Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas are truly Canadian celebrations woven into our national fabric.
I feel very fortunate to have been invited to participate in this auspicious holiday, and I am certainly looking forward to celebrating Diwali again in the years to come.
