Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on U.N. Investigation of War Crimes in Sri Lanka
March 28, 2014
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement today on the United Nations Human Rights Council’s decision to open an investigation into possible war crimes in Sri Lanka’s civil war:
“We welcome the establishment of an independent, international investigation into war crimes and violations of human rights and humanitarian law in Sri Lanka.
“Liberals have long called for such an investigation to address past and on-going violence and human rights violations in Sri Lanka. We will continue to voice our concern internationally over these on-going abuses and violations. Canada must play a constructive role in ensuring the success of this international investigation.
“The Commonwealth should be an active participant in this investigation and respond appropriately to its findings. We also call on members of the Commonwealth to address Sri Lanka’s persistent and serious violations of democratic and human rights.
“Together, we must endeavor to achieve peace and reconciliation for the people of Sri Lanka, and a stable and prosperous future for all of its citizens.”
