Just the Facts: Conservatives Cut Infrastructure Funding
April 1, 2014
Today, Conservative cuts will slash infrastructure investment across the country by nearly 90 percent. This decision, which was made by the Conservatives in an attempt to balance the budget for the next election, will do nothing to generate economic growth or help middle class families. • As of April 1st, 2014, new funding for the Conservative government’s Building Canada Fund drops from $1.7 billion in 2013-2014 to $210 million in 2014-2015.
• The New Building Canada Fund, which offers infrastructure funding to communities across the country, will not return to current funding levels until 2019.
• The Federation of Canadian Municipalities says that a lack of meaningful consultations with municipal leaders has led to “serious flaws in the design of the New Building Canada Fund.”
• Due to the government’s nearly 90% funding cut, vital infrastructure projects, such as local road upgrades, are no longer eligible for federal funding under the New Building Canada Fund.
• Liberal MPs have been calling on the government to immediately end their irresponsible cuts to infrastructure funding. It is time to invest and generate the growth that will benefit our communities.
