Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Mental Health Week
May 6, 2014
TORONTO – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement in recognition of Mental Health Week:
“During Mental Health Week, Canadians are encouraged to engage in an open dialogue on mental health issues and awareness. To this day, mental health illness continues to be met with stigma and discrimination, which prevents those living with mental health issues from seeking help.
“One in five Canadians will experience a mental health issue during their lifetime. It is important that we foster a welcoming environment for free and frank discussion. We need to create better support for mental health in Canada. I am constantly inspired by my mother, Margaret, and the many other Canadians who have chosen to raise awareness about mental illness by sharing their personal struggles.
“Initiatives like Mental Health Week are essential in promoting good mental health, but Canada must do more to encourage mental health, prevent mental illness, and expand access to care and recovery services and support. Today I reiterate our call for the federal government to fully implement Canada’s mental health strategy.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, please join us in spreading awareness for mental health during this Mental Health Week.”
