Liberal statement on National Day of Honour
May 9, 2014
OTTAWA – Liberal National Defence Critic, Joyce Murray, today issued the following statement in recognition of the National Day of Honour:
“Today, Canadians across the country pause to reflect on our country’s hard-fought military mission in Afghanistan over the course of 12 years.
“The servicemen and women who participated in Canada’s mission in Afghanistan consistently demonstrated tremendous bravery and sacrifice. With the aim of fostering democracy in a volatile region of the world, members of the Canadian Forces played a vital role in the stabilization and development of the Afghan nation, particularly with respect to equality for women and the education of girls.”
Liberal Veterans Affairs Critic, Frank Valeriote, continued:
“Today is a day to honour the exceptional contributions of the more than 40,000 courageous Canadians who served in the name of our country during the conflict in Afghanistan. Their bravery exemplifies the very best of the Canadian values of service and sacrifice. They and the families that supported them are true heroes who are to be admired and respected. We must also never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Afghan mission.
“On this, the National Day of Honour, the Liberal Party of Canada reaffirms its unwavering commitment to support Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, and their families with great pride and gratitude now and in the years to come.”
