Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Black History Month
February 1, 2015
“Black History Month, marked each February, is a time to educate ourselves and celebrate the tremendous influence of Black Canadians on our society.
“For more than four centuries, Black Canadians have made significant contributions to Canada’s storied history – from Mathieu Da Costa to the Underground Railroad and the fight to end slavery to Canada’s first black politician, Mifflin Gibbs.
“As a country, we are made great, not in spite of our differences, but precisely because of them. We are bound as a people by our shared belief in the principles of equality and fairness, and remain committed to working together to end discrimination and inequality.
“This month, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the integral role that Black Canadians have played in shaping Canada into the country we know and love.”
