Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Ukraine’s Independence Day
August 24, 2015
BELLEVILLE, ON – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Ukraine’s Independence Day:
“This week, I join Ukrainians in Canada and around the world in celebration of the 24th anniversary of Ukrainian independence. Canada and Ukraine share a special relationship, with more than 1.3 million Canadians tracing their roots to the country.
“On this occasion, we pause to remember those who fought for democracy and liberty in Ukraine 24 years ago. Today, as the people of Ukraine continue their fight for freedom in the face of escalating Russian aggression, we strongly reiterate our commitment to actively and constructively assist in the rebuilding of Ukraine’s economic and democratic institutions.
“The global community has a vital role to play in helping to preserve and protect Ukraine’s sovereignty. A Liberal government will demonstrate real, significant leadership, and develop long-term support to help rebuild Ukraine.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada, I would like to extend my best wishes to those marking Ukraine’s Independence Day. I also reaffirm our call for Canada to continue working with our allies to apply increased political and economic pressure on Russia to end its interference in Ukrainian affairs.”
