Conservatives Must Release Report on Champlain Bridge
June 26, 2014
OTTAWA – The Liberal Critic for Transport, Infrastructure, and Communities, David McGuinty, today issued the following statement, calling on the Conservative government to fully release its report on the impact of tolls on the Champlain Bridge.
“The Conservative government is hiding important information from Quebecers about how tolls on the Champlain Bridge will impact the redistribution of traffic to nearby bridges in Montreal.
“The Conservative government’s 214-page report on the Champlain Bridge was redacted to the point of it being almost entirely blacked-out. This is completely inexcusable. Infrastructure Canada claims that this is as a result of ‘sensitive financial information.’ However, Liberals believe that Montrealers have the right to know how tolls on the Champlain Bridge will impact traffic flow throughout their city and place additional strain on other transportation infrastructure.
“This situation is a perfect example of why government information must be open by default, which is precisely what Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s Transparency Act will require by law. Citizens should not have to fight their government for access to important information on how government decisions will impact their lives.”
