A lesson from the Filipino community
November 16, 2013
On Thursday, I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with some people from the Filipino community in Winnipeg, at an event organized by local M.P. Kevin Lamoureux. I was absolutely inspired by the resolve of these leaders as they begin organizing and supporting the disaster relief, all while in the midst of unthinkable grief.
A week has gone by since Typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc and tremendous destruction on the Philippines.
This tragedy has left the Philippines devastated, and inflicted unthinkable suffering and loss on its people. Many still search for their loved ones. While images of the devastation continue to leave Canadians in shock, none are more shaken than members of Canada’s Filipino community.
While little solace can be found these past few days, it can be witnessed in the inspiring way Canada’s Filipino community has come together to support relief efforts. They provide an example of the value of communities and their strength in the face of adversity.
In the wake of this horrible tragedy, we must maintain faith in our families, in our communities, and in our commitment to rebuilding. Together, Canadians will ensure that the people of the Philippines do not shoulder this burden alone.
