Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau Marks Anniversary of the Lac-Mégantic Disaster
July 6, 2014
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement in observance of the first anniversary of the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster:
“Today, we pause in solemn remembrance of those whose lives were lost, and in support of those whose lives were irrevocably changed by the tragic events that took place in Lac-Mégantic on July 6, 2013.
“While we still grieve, let us not forget the courage and selflessness demonstrated by our first responders. We are all grateful to those who came to this community’s aid during its time of need.
“Canada is a country that was built and continues to be connected by rail. Our rail system passes through the hearts of so many Canadian communities and we must strive to make our railroads the safest in the world. No effort can be spared to ensure that the tragic events of Lac-Mégantic are never repeated.
“All our thoughts are with the Lac-Mégantic community as you continue rebuilding with courage and determination.”
