Liberal Party of Canada statement on the death of Ariel Sharon
January 11, 2014
OTTAWA AND MONTRÉAL – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the death of the former Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon:
“It is with great sadness that I learned Ariel Sharon has passed away. He will be remembered by Canadians for dedicating his life to Israel.
“Mr. Sharon demonstrated resilience throughout his life, but he was also a man who recognised that military solutions were insufficient to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I extend my condolences to the Sharon family and the people of Israel at this difficult time.”
Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic, Marc Garneau, continued:
“Ariel Sharon will be remembered for his central role in building the modern state of Israel we see today. As Prime Minister, he understood the need for peace in the region and a two-state solution.”
