Liberal Party of Canada statement on the fifth anniversary of the Haiti earthquake
January 12, 2015
MONTRÉAL – Liberal Critic for Foreign Affairs, Marc Garneau, today issued the following statement regarding the fifth anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti:
“First, I would like to offer my condolences to the millions of friends and family members still mourning the tragic deaths of loved ones at the hands of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
“While world events too often showcase human violence and cruelty, let us focus today on the solidarity, compassion, and mutual assistance displayed in the aftermath of this tragedy.
“The Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus join all of those who will take time to remember the earthquake that hit Haiti.”
Emmanuel Dubourg, Liberal M.P. for Bourassa, continued:
“After five difficult years of reconstruction, my native country of Haiti is rising back up and courageously standing on its own two feet. This would have been impossible without the continued support of Canadians for my fellow Haitians, the latest display of a special and lasting relationship.
“In Haiti, the crumbled infrastructure and the country’s shaken institutions are being reconstructed. In both cases, we must continue to stand with Haitians as they build a more robust society, which will serve as an example of hope and solidarity.”
