Liberal statement on National Aboriginal History Month
June 1, 2015
OTTAWA – Liberal Aboriginal Affairs Critic, Carolyn Bennett, today issued the following statement on National Aboriginal History Month:
“In June, we celebrate National Aboriginal History Month. We take this time to celebrate and honour First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities in Canada, and their fundamental contributions to the building of our country.
“This month-long period is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn and deepen our understanding of Aboriginal societies, and the history of the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Peoples.
“During National Aboriginal History Month and beyond, let us remember and reinforce the cooperative, nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous Peoples upon which our country was founded. Let us also commit to returning to this original relationship, based on partnership, respect, and cooperation, which is essential to fostering real reconciliation and to closing the socio-economic gaps that remain across Aboriginal communities.”
