Calgary, Alberta – Today, Ahmed Hussen, Liberal candidate for York South-Weston and Team Trudeau candidates in Calgary highlighted the Liberal plan to move forward for everyone in Alberta.
“The Liberals have been there for Albertans throughout the COVID-19 pandemic – from helping almost 1 in 4 Albertans with the Canada Emergency Recovery Benefit to supporting the province through COVID-19 by investing in our universal health care system,” said Ahmed Hussen. “But we can’t stop there. Albertans and their families need better access to quality, affordable childcare, better access to a family doctor no matter where they live in the province, and more affordable housing. We need bold action to build a better Canada, and we have a real plan to make it happen.”
Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team have had Albertans’ backs during COVID-19. Eight out of every 10 dollars spent across the country in response to COVID-19 came from the Liberal government. Now, as we work to rebuild, we know vaccines are the key to finishing the fight against COVID-19 and getting our economy back on track.
Only the Liberal team will ensure people on planes and trains, and in the federal public service are vaccinated, while Erin O’Toole can’t even ensure his own candidates are protected. Liberals will follow the science and invest in a better health care system, in mental health services and in clearing the waitlists of health system surgeries and services. A better, universal health care system is one part of our plan to support people across Alberta.
A re-elected Liberal government will finish the fight against COVID-19 and grow our economy by:
- Launching a COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination Fund to support provinces and territories who implement a requirement for proof of vaccine credentials for businesses and public spaces (we’ll be ready when Jason Kenney steps up);
- Procure enough vaccines to ensure all Canadians have access to free COVID-19 booster shots as needed;
- Extending the Canada Recovery Hiring Program to March 31, 2022, so businesses can hire more workers and Canadians can get back to work;
- Move forward with providing more low-wage workers with up to an additional $1,400 to ensure that no one who is working full-time lives in poverty; and
- Move forward with a plan for affordable and quality $10 a day child care for all Albertans, while creating the greatly needed childcare spaces.
This plan builds on the support our Liberal government provided during the pandemic, including:
- Getting the job done on vaccines, and continuing to do whatever it takes to keep Canadians safe and healthy;
- The Canada Emergency Response Benefit, which supported over 1 million Albertans, nearly 1 out of every 4 people in the province;
- The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, which has protected 679,000 jobs with $12.5 billion in subsidies in Alberta;
- Low-interest loans for Canada’s hardest-hit industries, like energy and clean technology sectors; and
- The Canada Emergency Business Account, which provided interest-free, partially forgivable, loans of up to $60,000 to help Albertan businesses meet their everyday expenses, with $6.81 billion in loans.
“Just like Jason Kenney, Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives have no credibility when it comes protecting the health and safety of Albertans,” said George Chahal, Liberal candidate for Calgary Skyview. “The federal Liberal government supported Albertans through the pandemic, we’ll get the job done on vaccines and we will continue to support Alberta’s recovery. Mr. O’Toole wants to bring us backward, with cuts to child care services and bring in private, for-profit healthcare to Canada. We can’t let that happen. We have to keep moving forward — for everyone.”
