April 22, 2015
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Israel’s national day of independence, Yom Ha’atzmaut:
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I am pleased to offer my very best wishes to the Jewish community in Canada and around the world on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel.
“It is a source of great pride that Canada first recognized Israel’s independence in 1948, establishing formal diplomatic relations on May 11, 1949. Since then, our two countries have shared an enduring bond of friendship, rooted in our shared commitment to peace and democracy. We applaud Israel’s remarkable accomplishments across many fields, and congratulate her people on their achievements.
“On this day, we also take the opportunity to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to working with regional partners and allies to ensure a safe and secure state for the Jewish people, and a lasting peace between all peoples in the Middle East.
“Yom Ha’atzmaut Sameach!”
