Statement by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau on the Death of Andy Scott
June 25, 2013
OTTAWA– Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau made the following statement today on the death of the Honourable Andy Scott, former Liberal MP for Fredericton:
“It is with great sadness that I learned of Andy Scott’s passing.
For 15 years, Andy dutifully served the people of Fredericton in the House of Commons. In addition, he held a number of Cabinet portfolios, including acting as Minister of State for Infrastructure, Solicitor General of Canada, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and non-Status Indians. He will be remembered as a chief architect of the historic Kelowna Accord.
Andy’s commitment to community was the hallmark of his character. Throughout his life, and long before Andy entered federal politics, he sought to empower those around him, particularly the disadvantaged as well as persons with disabilities. While losing Andy comes as a shock to us all, he leaves behind a great legacy of championing social justice and evidence-based policy.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, my family and I would like to extend our most sincere sympathies to Andy’s wife, Denise, and his three children, Nathan, Nicholas and Noah.”
