Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Mental Illness Awareness Week
October 6, 2014
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement in recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week:
“Mental Illness Awareness Week is designed to raise awareness in Canada about the realities surrounding mental health, and to help end the stigma too often associated with mental illness.”
“One in five Canadians will experience a mental health issue during their lifetime. We must remove the barriers and stigma associated with discussing mental health and mental illness. Many brave Canadians provide a constant source of inspiration to us all by choosing to talk freely and frankly about their personal struggles.”
“Today, I once again call on the government to fully implement Canada’s mental health strategy, namely expanding access to care, prevention efforts, and recovery services across the country.”
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I encourage all Canadians to participate in fostering open discussions during this Mental Illness Awareness Week.”
