Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on National Flag of Canada Day
February 15, 2014
OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement on National Flag of Canada Day:
“National Flag of Canada Day presents us with an opportunity to reflect on an important moment in Canada’s development as a nation.
“Forty-nine years ago today, the red and white, maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa. To this day, Canadians proudly display our flag and what it stands for: a free and democratic country that is the envy of the world.
“On this day, I am also reminded of a great loss. John Matheson, who championed the creation of our flag, passed away last December, at the age of 96. Though John is gone, he has left an extraordinary legacy: a symbol that unites Canadians from across our vast and diverse country.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I join with all Canadians in recognizing this important day in our country’s history.”
