Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on Republic Day

WATERLOO, ON – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the Republic Day of Portugal:

“This year marks the 105^th anniversary of the proclamation of the Portuguese First Republic, and we join Portuguese communities across Canada to celebrate Republic Day – also known asImplantação da República.

“Canada and Portugal enjoy a strong, historic, and lasting friendship built on common values and traditions. With more than 400,000 Portuguese-Canadians calling our country home, they have made vital contributions and shared their distinct culture and heritage with Canada.

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada, Sophie and I encourage all Canadians to take this opportunity to celebrate Portugal’s vibrant history, and extend our best wishes to all those marking this special day alongside family and friends.”
