Statement by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau on Canadian Multiculturalism Day
June 27, 2013
BRAMPTON, ON– Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau made the following statement today on Canadian Multiculturalism Day:
“Today, on Canadian Multiculturalism Day, we celebrate the incredible ethnic, religious and cultural diversity of our beautiful country.
From our earliest days as a nation, through to the official adoption of multiculturalism in 1971 and the later inclusion of this principle in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canada’s strength and vibrancy have long been built on the cornerstone of diversity.
Canadian multiculturalism quite simply affirms that all our citizens are truly equal, and that their individual contributions enhance and enrich our national character.
While our shared values and commitment to freedom and equality have certainly enabled Canada to prosper, this would have been impossible without our unique ability to draw upon a variety of influences and traditions from around the world.
Canadian multiculturalism has ultimately come to symbolize our collective commitment to realize a more just and humane world, and today I join with all those celebrating Canadian Multiculturalism Day.”
