Liberals announce plan for investment in Champlain Bridge infrastructure
September 3, 2015
BROSSARD, QC – A Liberal government will remove the toll on the Champlain Bridge and immediately move forward with the necessary bridge construction, said the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today.
“This is about our safety, how we get to work tomorrow, and our family’s quality of life. Smart investments in infrastructure strengthen our middle class. In this election, Canadians have a choice between jobs and growth, or cuts,” said Mr. Trudeau. “People in Greater Montreal know that investment in the new Champlain Bridge is badly needed and cannot be delayed any longer. Stephen Harper has ignored the needs of Quebecers by refusing to act on this pressing issue. A Liberal government will demonstrate real leadership and take immediate action.”
A Liberal government will swiftly move forward with the necessary, planned construction, but without the planned tolling system. The Champlain Bridge is a vital piece of infrastructure – not just for Quebecers who use it daily, but for Canada; 57 million people and nearly $20 billion worth of merchandise pass over this bridge each year. Everything must be done to accelerate and facilitate the bridge construction, and decisions should not be taken unilaterally. A Liberal government will ensure that the work, studies, payments, and decisions are transparent and based on facts.
“The Champlain Bridge is an essential artery to and from the city of Montreal, and the busiest bridge in Canada. It is a national bridge and an important trade corridor for the regional and national economies,” said Mr. Trudeau. “The Liberal Party recognizes the important role that the Champlain Bridge plays in the broader Canadian economy. We will ensure that all Canadians have the vital infrastructure they need to stay mobile, make it to work on time, and contribute to the economic growth of our country.”
