Just the Facts: Eight Years of Economic Mismanagement
February 6, 2014
Today marks eight years since Stephen Harper became Prime Minister.
The Conservatives have spent millions in taxpayer dollars trying to convince Canadians that they are sound economic managers. Eight years later, nothing could be further from the truth.
With low levels of economic growth, record household debt, and a youth unemployment rate that remains twice the national average, now is the time for the government to change its economic policies. Now is the time to invest in middle class families and get Canada back on track.
Under this Prime Minister:
- Canada has the worst economic growth record since R.B. Bennett in the depths of the great depression;
- The International Monetary Fund has warned that Canadians should expect to see little economic growth in the future;
- In fact, the IMF has found that our productivity gap has “eroded Canada’s external competitiveness, particularly in…manufacturing”;
- 55 percent of Canadians are troubled about their financial security, while 67 percent are worried about their children’s financial future; and
- The economic recovery has done nothing for young Canadians, who have 264,000 fewer jobs than before the recession.
