Harjit Sajjan: Equality, fairness, inclusion, and diversity
December 13, 2017
The holidays are fast approaching and many of us are counting down the days until we are reunited and can spend more time with our families and loved ones — something I did often when I was deployed overseas.
This is the time of year when people put their differences aside in the spirit of the season. But luckily, Canada is a place where our differences are a source of strength throughout the year.
As Liberals, we are working to build a Canada where we champion these progressive values — like equality, fairness, inclusion, and diversity.
We’ve come a long way, but we need to remember that Canada isn’t immune to divisive behaviour. I know, because I experienced racism firsthand not too many years ago — and I’ve seen its impacts on too many others throughout my life and career.
I worked to overcome those barriers and eventually became the first Sikh to command a Canadian army reserve regiment. That perspective gives me pause and concern when our opponents continue to focus on the politics of fear.
We have pledged to welcome an historic number of new Canadians between now and 2020. We’re simplifying our immigration process to make it easier to bring families together. We also re-settled more than 48,000 Syrian refugees.
And we’re still fighting for LGBTQ2 Canadians so that all of us can feel safe and have their most fundamental rights protected, and we’ve started approaching our policies with a gender-based analysis to ensure they promote gender equity.
Together, we’re making real change happen one step at a time.
You’ve shown your support for our movement and now we want you to chip in what you can! Donate now to support the re-election fund so that we can re-elect Justin Trudeau and even more Liberals across the country in 2019.
