Liberal plan for caregivers met with positive reviews
August 21, 2015
Yesterday, Justin Trudeau announced that a Liberal government will provide better support for caregivers, by making caregiving benefits more flexible and accessible to any Canadian providing care to a seriously ill family member.
Liberals are committed to economic security and growth for the middle class, and our plan will provide Canadian families with the financial support they need during especially difficult times.
We are pleased that three major umbrella health coalitions – Canadian Caregiver Coalition, Health Charities Coalition of Canada, and Neurological Health Charities Canada – have voiced support for our plan. These coalitions represent 93 Canadian health charities, including: Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Parkinson Society Canada, Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, and the Canadian Nurses Association.
Here is a sample of what they are saying about the Liberal plan for caregivers:
“The improved compassionate care benefit proposed today will help more families care for their loved ones and puts a spotlight on health for the first time in this federal election campaign. This is a step forward in making sure caregivers receive the support, care and resources they need, and it’s a step all parties must now build on.”
-Canadian Cancer Society (Statement, 20 August 2015)
“Today’s Liberal party pledge to create an employment insurance compassionate care benefit could potentially help the millions of Canadians now caring for loved ones who are ill.”
-Canadian Nurses Association (Press Release, 20 August 2015)
“The Canadian Caregiver Coalition (CCC), Health Charities Coalition of Canada (HCCC) and Neurological Health Charities Canada (NHCC) applaud today’s announcement that brings to light the needs of all Canadian caregivers during the federal election campaign.
The proposed extended measures to the Compassionate Care Benefit would provide much needed financial support for Canadians who take on a caring role to support someone with a diminishing physical ability.”
-Canadian Caregiver Coalition, Health Charities Coalition of Canada and Neurological Health Charities Canada (News Release, 20 August 2015)
Liberals know that far too many Canadians shoulder the responsibility of caregiving, and a Liberal government led by Justin Trudeau is committed to making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. Liberals will continue to stand up for Canadian families.
