Liberal statement on recent attack in Hamilton

TORONTO – Liberal Critic for Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, John McCallum, today issued the following statement on the attack of two students in Hamilton:

“I strongly condemn the recent attack on two McMaster University students as they made their way home following evening prayers at Hamilton Downtown Mosque. While the assailants’ motives have not yet been made clear, the Hamilton police force is investigating this incident as a potential hate crime.

“These actions are reprehensible and have absolutely no place in a country like Canada. We are a country founded on diversity, and our Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees both freedom of religion and a person’s right to security.

“Let us join together to reiterate and reinforce our commitment to a diverse and inclusive Canada that is made stronger because, not in spite, of our differences.”
