Liberal statement on the mission in Iraq
September 28, 2014
MONTREAL – Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic, Marc Garneau, today issued the following statement on Canada’s involvement in the mission in Iraq:
“Liberals support the present limited duration, non-combat, advisory mission of Canadian Armed Forces in Iraq.”
“We cannot support any new military mission in Iraq without hearing directly from the government the full details of what it proposes, and without that mission being brought before Parliament for review and examination.”
“Over the past several days, the government has opted to leak information about the possible future nature of Canada’s deployment in Iraq. This is no time for Mr. Harper to be secretive. This is a serious issue of life and death. The place for this debate is in Parliament. In this place, on this issue, the Prime Minister needs to be open and truthful with Canadians about his plans.”
