Liberal Statement on National Peacekeepers’ Day
August 9, 2014
MONTREAL & VANCOUVER – Liberal Critic for Foreign Affairs, Marc Garneau, today made the following statement on National Peacekeepers’ Day:
“Peacekeeping has long played a central role in shaping the identity of Canadians, as well as how they see their nation and understand its role in the world. Today, we join together in celebration and recognition of the laudable work of Canada’s peacekeepers abroad.
“Canadians continue to honour our country’s proud tradition of contributing to peacekeeping efforts around the world. In times of conflict and disaster, they can be counted upon to risk their own safety and security in order to serve those in need.
“Today, on behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I express my infinite gratitude for the courageous and selfless work that has been and will continue to be conducted by Canadian peacekeepers. May we pause and honour all those who sacrificed their own lives in the pursuit of peace, safety, and freedom for others.”
Liberal Critic for National Defence, Joyce Murray, continued:
“In addition to the physical security they provide to civilians who find themselves in harm’s way, Canada’s peacekeepers work to advance peace and human rights in societies burdened by conflict; they provide hope and help to build societies based on good governance and the rule of law.
“The Liberal Party remains wholly committed to supporting Canada’s peacekeepers as they advance the cause of peace and human rights worldwide.”
