Liberal statement on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
November 25, 2014
“Today, Canada joins the world in recognizing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
“On this day, we restate the importance of gender equality and firmly denounce all forms of violence against women. We must protect women in Canada and around the world from violations of their most basic fundamental rights to safety and security.
“Canadian women have made progress, but there is still work to be done. Every day, some 3,000 Canadian women are threatened by violence. Worldwide, 35 percent of women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. We must do better, both at home and abroad.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I join in recognizing the full equality of women around the world and urge the government to redouble its efforts to end violence against women.”
