Liberals to invest in Greater Montreal infrastructure
October 1, 2015
MONTREAL – As part of an historic investment in public transit to create jobs, grow our economy, and strengthen the middle class, a Liberal government will provide funding for local transit priorities in Greater Montreal, said the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today.
“Across the country, the need for modern, reliable public transit has never been more apparent. Here in Montreal and the surrounding area, local leaders are proposing projects to keep people moving and the economy growing,” said Mr. Trudeau. “That’s why a new Liberal government will support the city of Montreal, the province of Quebec, and the Caisse de Dépôt in their combined effort to put a new light rail line on the Champlain Bridge replacement. We will also make sure that the bridge is toll-free, and that we work collaboratively on the rapid transit line into West Island.”
New light rail on the Champlain Bridge replacement and the creation of rapid transit into the West Island, including service to Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, are precisely the kinds of transit projects that would benefit from the historic infrastructure commitment made by Justin Trudeau in August. A Liberal government will quadruple federal investment in public transit over the next decade, investing nearly 20 billion new dollars in transit infrastructure. Municipalities – which are responsible for the majority of public transit in Canada – have limited revenue sources. We will work with provinces, territories, and municipalities to see that local projects are prioritized, and ensure funding is flexible rather than a roadblock to development.
“Montrealers deserve a safe, quick, and efficient way to cross the city – whether it’s to visit friends, get home to family, or make it to a job interview on time,” said Mr. Trudeau. “Unlike Thomas Mulcair, Liberals know that strong and prosperous communities invest in themselves and build ambitiously. Investing in public transit is about investing in Canadians, and the Liberal plan will grow the economy, strengthen the middle class, and create liveable communities in the process.”
