February 6, 2017
Ottawa, ON – The Liberal Party of Canada announced today that Mona Fortier is the official Team Trudeau candidate in the upcoming federal by-election for Ottawa–Vanier. Several thousand local registered Liberals elected Ms. Fortier on Sunday at the largest Liberal candidate nomination meeting in Eastern Ontario in 30 years.
Born and raised in Ottawa–Vanier, Mona Fortier has a deep record of community leadership in the areas of health care, education, economic development, francophone affairs and tourism. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and MBA from the University of Ottawa and her extensive community experience has involved serving on the Shaw Centre Board of Directors, the Provincial Advisory Committee on Francophone Affairs (Ontario), and the Montfort Hospital Board of Directors. A proud mother of three, Mona has received a number of awards for her community work, including the Queen Elizabeth II – Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
“Mona Fortier is a tireless advocate for families in Ottawa–Vanier, and she has a proven record of leadership in the community,” said Anna Gainey, President of the Liberal Party of Canada. “Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team are looking forward to campaigning with Mona to grow and strengthen our middle class, and to build an even brighter future for families in Ottawa–Vanier and across Canada.”
This was the first contested Liberal nomination since the party adopted its new open constitution in 2016, which allows for all Canadians who share Liberal values to join the party at no cost. Over 50,000 Canadians have now registered as Liberals since the summer alone.
