Stan Sakamoto to be Team Trudeau candidate in Medicine Hat–Cardston–Warner
September 15, 2016
Medicine Hat – The Liberal Party of Canada announced today that Stan Sakamoto will be the official Team Trudeau candidate in the upcoming by-election for Medicine Hat–Cardston–Warner. His nomination will be acclaimed by local Liberals at a Candidate Selection Meeting in Medicine Hat on Sunday, September 18th, with nominations having been open since early August.
Born and raised in Medicine Hat and a father of seven, Stan Sakamoto has been a successful local business leader for over 36 years – and has dedicated his entire career to creating jobs and opportunity for Southern Albertans.
“Southern Alberta has always been my home, and now more than ever, we need a voice at the table who will be a champion for the middle class, our families, and our communities,” Sakamoto said. “With important steps like a middle class tax cut, the new Canada Child Benefit, and strengthening the Canada Pension Plan, Justin Trudeau’s plan for real change is making a difference in the lives of Canadian families. I will work hard for all residents of Medicine Hat–Cardston–Warner to ensure that nothing stands in the way of the support that middle class families need and deserve.”
Stan’s parents came to Medicine Hat looking for opportunity and independence after losing everything when Japanese Canadians were interned during World War II. He was the first Japanese Canadian to be born in Medicine Hat.
He grew up developing an incredible work ethic on his parents’ vegetable farm, and attended Crescent Heights High School and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. He is a past director of the Medicine Hat Rotary Club, past trustee for the Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery, and former board member of Redi Enterprises Society.
“Stan Sakamoto is a trusted community leader who knows firsthand that a strong economy starts with a strong middle class,” said Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “Our plan offers real help to Canada’s middle class and every family working hard to join it, and I am proud to be working with Stan to keep building a better future for Medicine Hat–Cardston–Warner and all Canadians.”
