Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on a recent assault in Montreal
October 1, 2015
MONTRÉAL – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on reports of a pregnant woman recently assaulted in the Anjou area of Montréal:
“As Canadians, diversity is our strength, not a reason for division and violence. I was deeply concerned to learn of this assault on a pregnant Muslim woman in Montreal. Such acts are completely unacceptable and run counter to basic Canadian values and rights, embodied in and protected by our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
“Canadian multiculturalism means a country where people from every place and culture, who speak every language, live, work, build, and thrive together. For much of the world, we represent the most hopeful vision of what the future can hold.
“In defending Canada, we cannot allow ourselves to become less Canadian. As Quebecers and Canadians, we must stay true to who we are, and stay true to our values.”
