Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on International Holocaust Remembrance Day
January 27, 2015
OTTAWA – Liberal Party of Canada Leader, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau:
“Today, as we commemorate one of history’s darkest periods, we honour the memories of the more than six million victims of the Holocaust and pay tribute to those who survived. In 2015, this day carries an even greater significance as we mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp.
“It would be impossible to fully comprehend the evil and terror of the Holocaust – epitomized by the atrocities committed at Auschwitz-Birkenau – were it not for those who endured its unimaginable suffering and survived. Those survivors – many of whom are Jewish Canadians – displayed a strength and courage that is nothing short of astounding. Their accounts remain a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit.
“We bear a collective responsibility to keep these stories alive by continuing to educate others about the Holocaust and the evil that fuelled this attempt to extinguish an entire people.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I reaffirm our steadfast commitment to never again allow atrocities like the Holocaust to occur.”
